Agricultural & Medical Biotechnology
at the University of Kentucky
The Agricultural and Medical Biotechnology (AMBT) program is a life science degree for students who wish to pursue opportunities in biotechnology, human health, agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability. You will gain a strong foundation in chemistry, biology and genetics, be mentored by exceptional scientists, and gain valuable hands-on experience in cutting-edge research.
The design of the degree allows you to individualize coursework in a scientific area tailored to your career goals. To develop your skills as a scientist, you will complete your own research project under the guidance of a mentor of your choosing. You will be well prepared for a rewarding career in the agricultural or biomedical sciences with opportunities for graduate training in biological research, human and veterinary medicine, and other related professional fields.
Excellence in Undergraduate Research
Congratulations to Layni Jones (L) and Violet Newhart (R), the Fall 2024 Glenn B. Collins Award Undergraduate Research Award in Agricultural Biotechnology co-recipients. Layni and Violet were selected as co-recipients to recognize their outstanding independent research and skilled presentations as demonstrated during the Fall 2024 ABT 395 student symposium.
About AMBT at UK
Academics
Our study of biotechnology involves learning foundational life science principles in chemistry and biology while focusing on genetics and molecular biology.
Community
Our community of students, instructors and advisors has a passion for the science of genetics and molecular biology.
Undergraduate Research
From our students to our instructors, our interest in research unites us as we make discoveries to improve the world around us.
B.S. in Agricultural and Medical Biotechnology
Many paths. One biotech degree.
We emphasize hands-on learning in genetics, molecular biology, genetic engineering, chemistry, and biology to train tomorrow's scientific leaders. Whether you are developing treatments for a genetic disease or genetically engineering drought resistant crops, you will learn to combine basic scientific concepts with problem solving and critical thinking skills to solve medical and agricultural problems.
University Scholars Program
Earn a Master's Degree with ABT and the University Scholars Program
The University Scholars Program provides ABT students with a pathway to a Master's degree. The program allows twelve graduate credit hours to apply to a master's degree and an undergraduate degree. The University Scholars Program is currently available to ABT students who wish to pursue a Master's degree in the following disciplines:
